Empower young people from a refugee background through sport
About Pushing Barriers - south-west Brisbane and Ipswich
Pushing Barriers has been helping young people from a refugee background participate in community club sport since 2017.
We know that being involved in club sport helps break down social and cultural barriers for young people and their families and helps them connect to the community.
But our founders, Tracy Tucker and Jenifer French also realised that playing club sport was almost impossible for these young people. Their families struggle to afford club fees, to buy their equipment and to transport them to games and training sessions.
We provide registration fees, uniforms, transport, liaison between team and home, mentorship and higher level sporting opportunities to young people from a refugee background in Brisbane and Ipswich. With a small team of volunteers, we have supported over 250 young people to play sport.
Our mission
Connect young people from a refugee background to community through sport.
Our objective
Advance and improve the lives and welfare of young people from a refugee background.
What we do
We operate mainly in south-west Brisbane and Ipswich, providing funding, transport, mentoring and liaison to help young people from a refugee background to be included and welcomed into Australian culture and society through sport.
We provide:
- financial support by partnering with sporting clubs to cover the costs of club fees, uniforms and equipment.
- transport to and from competition and training as required, through a well-coordinated volunteer driver team.
- mentoring and team and family liaison to support participation at club level and higher levels if the opportunity arises.
- opportunities for our participants to meet positive role models aligned with Pushing Barriers’ values to motivate and inspire them.
- education for sports clubs, their officials, volunteers, families and players about the value of diversity, inclusion and acceptance of people from refugee backgrounds within the sporting community.
