Pushing Barriers
What sports are our young people supported to play?
The majority of the young people supported through the Pushing Barriers program play football(soccer). Some play netball or basketball and participate in athletics.
From what countries do Pushing Barriers families come from?
Our families come from various countries including South Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Burundi.
Are there eligibility criteria to be supported by Pushing Barriers?
Yes, support is offered to young people aged 12-18 years who have come to Australia on a Humanitarian Visa and have lived in Australia for less than five years at the time they are first supported.
Are there different levels of support?
Yes, the program manager determines the level of support after meeting with the parent or carer of the participant.
For example, some players do not require help with transport, others may only require assistance to pay club registration fees, while others will need the full range of support we provide including, transport, equipment, and fees.
Where do most of the participants live that are supported by Pushing Barriers?
Most of our players live in Brisbane’s south-west and Ipswich.
How does Pushing Barriers receive funding?
We receive funding through corporate partnerships, private donors, government grants and fundraising activities.
